Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I missed the Application Workshop, can I still apply?

A: Yes. The Application Workshop is optional.

Q: How many NHS members will the Faculty Council select?

A: As many as are qualified. The National NHS Constitution stipulates that no cap be placed on membership, given that candidates meet local requirements in all four categories.

Q: I’m a Freshman. Many of my NHS qualifying accomplishments took place in Middle School. May I include these on my Application? A: Generally speaking, no. However, an applicant may include such activities in hopes they will be considered. However, final member selection is still made by the Faculty Council.

Q: Does AVID count as a Leadership Role? A: No. It is an elective course. However, if you are involved in leadership positions within AVID, you may include these roles.

Q: Does membership in NJHS automatically qualify me for NHS membership? A: No. You will need to reapply.

Q: If I am selected as a member and I move from HHS, what happens to my NHS affiliation? A: If the new school has an NHS chapter, you’ll be automatically accepted during the transfer semester. However, you will then need to adhere to the local guidelines and requirements of that chapter.

Q: May I submit more than 2 Faculty Recommendations with my Application? A: Yes. The more character references the better.

Q: To better support my application and demonstrate my Character, Service and Leadership may I submit additional letters of recommendation from people not affiliated with HHS? A: Yes. But they may not come from family members.

Q: When and how will I be notified about membership selection? A: Via letter a few weeks after applications are due.

Q: Where can I find more detailed information about the National Honor Society? A: Visit www.nhs.us
